Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes (Baby Board Books) Review

This book is a very cute addition to the toddler literature. My little guys love singing the song and it is great for them to see the motions on the pages as well. It is not quite as good as some of the others in the series, but still a good purchase for the price. Especially for those kids who cannot get enough books!

Walt Disney's Classic Storybook (Disney Storybook Collections) Review

paper, the book is heavy and the overall quality is just amazing for the price, it is excellent, the stores are great and many from the original books I had when I was a child including Cinderella which I have not seen since I was about 10 years old so to have this book with this quality and these memories and price is just staggering. I love all the stories but Peter Pan, Mary Poppins, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland and Mickey Mouse's Picnic are my favorite memories and I can't tell you how much joy I have in being able to see them again, my old friends, who gave me so much fun and fantasy in my childhood and now again in my old age. Excellent product, so well made and again such high quality is incredible, especially at this price.

Great bedtime book:) - J. Moreno -
We bought this book for bedtime reading to our daughter. The artwork is beautiful and we love sharing these classic stories with our daughter.

"Beautiful, Vintage Artwork, but not exactly what I expected" - DEWEY MEE - ELLENSBURG, WA,
This is a collection of Classic Disney Big and Little Golden Books from the 1950's-1960's; featuring the vintage artwork I recalled from my childhood. This edition features big, gilded pages. I discovered, upon delivery, that about every third or fourth page was stuck together. I went through the entire book "unsticking" the pages. This was time-consuming and annoying, but the book seems fine now.
I remember a Big Golden Book of "Walt Disney's Mary Poppins" from the late 1960's or very early 1970's that, basically, told the entire story of Disney's movie version. I thought that was the edition that would be reproduced here. I was disappointed to find that what is called "Mary Poppins" here is just a brief, very poorly drawn, episode involving Uncle Albert's hysterical laughing fits and the tea party on the ceiling. There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about how magical Mary flies into the Banks household, her Jolly Holiday with Bert and the children, how she helps the household become a family again, etc.
Despite my disappoint over "Mary Poppins," the rest of the book is fine; featuring cute stories about Goofy, Chip and Dale, Donald Duck, and one, "Mickey Mouse's Picnic", that features an almost entirely forgotten Disney character; now more of a Disney footnote; called Clarabelle Cow. The storybook reproductions of classic Disney films; "Snow White," "Pinocchio," "Dumbo", "Lady (And The Tramp"), "Bambi", "Cinderella", "Alice In Wonderland", "Peter Pan" and "Sleeping Beauty"; are mostly fine. The artwork for this particular version of "Snow White," is a bit weird and offbeat, but also memorable and charming. The artwork and presentation of "Cinderella," "Alice In Wonderland", "Lady (And The Tramp") and "Peter Pan" is particularly breathtaking and exquisite.
This sturdy edition is just fine for children to read by themselves, or for parents to read to their children at bedtime. This edition is a great value for the price. But, for far superior storybook editions of classic Disney films and characters, I highly recommend the 5 Star "Walt Disney's Treasury Of Children's Classics" and "Disney's Princess Treasury"; which have broader, adult appeal as well.

Great! - Cayla A. Slater - Wichita, KS

Storybook Art: Hands-On Art for Children in the Styles of 100 Great Picture Book Illustrators (Bright Ideas for Learning) Review

"Storybook Art" is one of those keepers that can be used over and over again. And not necessarily for the art projects!

As a retired English teacher and current children's librarian, I have held thousands and thousands of books in my hands. This book ranks up there in the very top echelon of most organized books. In fact, the lay-out of illustrators and organization of information is just incredible.

But first, what this book is all about is the creation of art that goes beyond the book itself (on which the art is based) to show children (adults?) just how the illustrator/writer created the artwork so integral to the story. In other words this book contains "over 100 companion art activities matched to children's favorite picture books" (6).

Some examples:
Scratch board art based on Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are," a must-read classic.
Illustrated music--Nancy Winslow Parker's art in "Oh, a Hunting We Will Go"
Tankas to go with Faith Ringgold's "Tar Beach"
Friendship Stick (a likely to-be-treasured keeper) based on the classic "May I Bring a Friend" by Beatrice Schenk De Regniers
Color Outline--Molly Bang's "When Sophie Gets Angry--Really, Really Angry"

The variety of art projects is almost mind-bogling, just as the illustrations on which they are based.

Now the amazing organization. The art is group into four broad categories for projects: paint, draw, cut/collage, and craft/construction with artists in each presented alphabetically. The Chart of Contents in the front of the book provides this information. Also included is the birth dates of each illustrator. Just as teachers have little parties for each child as his/her birthday arrives, so too can the class recognize the illustrator's birthday (which many teachers already do for authors).

However, it is Chapter 5: Resource Guide and Index, which is so fabulous. Here is what the reader will find:
Author/Illustrator Information and Biographic Websites
Publisher Websites
Resource Books--Illustrators and Authors or Picture Books (just a short but handy list)
Illustrator Websites (worth the price of the book!!!)
Picture Book Publishers and ISBN numbers of books in this volume
Quotes and Cites (a quote is used by each illustrator--this shows its source)
Picture Book Awards
Illustrator Index
Author Index
Picture Book Index
Art Activity Index
Easy Index
Art Activity--Page Order Index
Storybook Art Illustrators Hall of Fame (with thumbnail photos)
Bright Ideas Bookshelf (other titles in this series of books about art across the curriculum)

What a dazzling array of books, illustrations, artists, writers, publishers, art activities. Oh my!

Literacy and Art, a greatly inspired team - Peggy Clayton - Massachusetts
Kids favorite books inspire easy art activities for kids. Excellent. I've found that when the kids do art projects that relate to their favorite picture books, they like their books more and want to read them more closely, and more often. They become finely tuned to the illustrations, and certainly this is an inspiration to create their own art. I've got some favorites in this book. One of them is based on Marshmallow the Bunny, where kids try their hand at charcoal drawing. Of course there's an Eric Carle collage from painted paper. And another favorite is Watercolor Snow Collage based on Ezra Jack Keats' "The Snowy Day". Really pretty but still open ended for kids to feel expression of their own. One of the most intriguing projects is one using simple photos the kids take, yes little kids can take pictures!!!, is based on Dare Wright's photography books with her little doll, Edith, and the doll's companion, Mr. Bear. Kids set up scenes with their toys and take digital pictures of them, then print out and tell stories. I did this with some kindergarteners and it was extremely successful. They want to do it all the time. So, why not? If they want to learn to read from their own little picture photo stories, who am I to say no? : ) Excellent for teachers and inspirational for kids.

MaryAnn Kohl, review update/literacy connection - MaryAnn F. Kohl - Bellingham, WA USA
I travel around the country working with childcare people and early childhood teachers (young kids through grade three). They seem to love this book, with its connection to favorite picture books. When kids do art that is in the style or technique of the illustrator, they are more tuned in to the book when they read it again, and they are definitely more tuned in to illustrations in all books. If you value the art of books, so will kids. I'm very happy that educators see the impact art can have on literacy.

Music, Informal Learning and the School: A New Classroom Pedagogy (Ashgate Popular and Folk Music Series) Review

This is an excellent and must-read book especially for music teachers interested in exploring and challenging alternate avenues for musical learning. The book is really a case study conducted in Great Britain where high school general music classes were given instruments without instruction, and asked to simply 'figure out' how to play the student selected songs. The findings of this study are amazing and very insightful especially in regards to how people approach and learn music when left to their own devices. This book isn't an advocacy for a particular methodology, and even Green agrees that the methods used in the case study would be too extreme as a standard generalized approach, but it does offer quite a lot of insight that challenges many of our assumes in regards to traditional general music approaches. And for those people weary of case studies filled with mind-numbing statistical, this book rightly avoids drowning the reading with endless numbers. Much of the findings are based on personal interviews with the teachers and students who partook in the study.

Music, Informal Learning and the School: A New Classroom Pedagogy (Ashgate Popular and Folk Music Series) Overview

This pioneering book reveals how the music classroom can draw upon the world of popular musicians' informal learning practices, so as to recognize and foster a range of musical skills and knowledge that have long been overlooked within music education. It investigates how far informal learning practices are possible and desirable in a classroom context; how they can affect young teenagers' musical skill and knowledge acquisition; and how they can change the ways students listen to, understand and appreciate music as critical listeners, not only in relation to what they already know, but beyond. It examines students' motivations towards music education, their autonomy as learners, and their capacity to work co-operatively in groups without instructional guidance from teachers. It suggests how we can awaken students' awareness of their own musicality, particularly those who might not otherwise be reached by music education, putting the potential for musical development and participation into their own hands.Bringing informal learning practices into a school environment is challenging for teachers. It can appear to conflict with their views of professionalism, and may at times seem to run against official educational discourses, pedagogic methods and curricular requirements. But any conflict is more apparent than real, for this book shows how informal learning practices can introduce fresh, constructive ways for music teachers to understand and approach their work. It offers a critical pedagogy for music, not as mere theory, but as an analytical account of practices which have fundamentally influenced the perspectives of the teachers involved.Through its grounded examples and discussions of alternative approaches to classroom work and classroom relations, the book reaches out beyond music to other curriculum subjects, and wider debates about pedagogy and curriculum.

As someone who's been buying books for myself and others all my life, let me just say that reading levels that are marked on most books for children are just averages. if you know that your child is an accelerated reader or is gifted, dont assume that the book that's slated for average 8 yr olds will be at "just the right level" for your gifted 8 yr old. and defnitely dont give the book a bad review, that really tarnishes the reputation for other customers.

Check Out Lights on Broadway: A Theatrical Tour from A to Z, with CD for $10.78

Lights on Broadway: A Theatrical Tour from A to Z, with CD Review

They say the neon lights are bright on Broadway.
Things are pretty bright on paper too.
And that's because of "Lights on Broadway: A Theatrical Tour From A to Z, a new book in which the bright lights of Broadway, as well as many other theatrical wonders, vividly come to life. The words are by Harriet Ziefert, but the real "stars" here are Elliot Kreloff's colorful and energetic illustrations and the quotes from Broadway luminaries such as Whoopi Goldberg, Kevin Kline, Nathan Lane, Billy Crudup, Harvey Fierstein and Stephen Sondheim.
Entries for each letter of the alphabet introduce readers to behind-the-scenes Broadway: A for audition, actor, audience and applause; M for marquee and matinee; S for stage, scenery, script and set. And so the stage is set for a world involving the Tony Award, the many people it takes to bring a performance to life, the information printed on a ticket and other essential backstage babble.
Another performer front and center (or it is that front and end?) is Brian Stokes Mitchell, the award-winning thespian and the present president of The Actors Fund. At the book's beginning, he gushes: "Welcome to my house, my home, my Broadway! As you take this very special tour, perhaps you too will be ignited by the incredible collaborative magic that gives life and light to the theater."
At the finish, he coos: "Unlike a movie or television program that is the same no matter where you sit or when you see it, live theater is custom-built for each audience. Every performance is different and every individual in that audience has a unique experience that won't be repeated ever again. It's what gives the theater and life. ZING!"
By the way, the book comes with a CD featuring the single "I Was Here," written (in ragtime?) by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty and performed by BSM. Better yet: A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to The Actors Fund. Even better: Mitchell with star in a "semi-staged production" of Annie Get Your Gun at Chicago's Ravinia Festival opposite Patti LuPone, August 13-15, 2010. The musical revival will be directed by Lonny Price. Paul Gemignani will conduct the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, commemorating the 150th anniversary of Annie Oakley's birth.

This amazing book shows just how bright the lights are on Broadway! BRAVO! - D. Fowler - Vermont
The Broadway stage is one of the most exciting, mesmerizing places anyone could choose to be. There are a lot of things going on before you buy that ticket to get into the theater and this amazing ABCs of the lights on Broadway will guide you though the process from the actors to the sets to the Tony Awards and beyond. Each Broadway letter will give you a lot more than just one descriptive word. For example when we see the letter "O," for orchestra there is a two-page vibrant spread showing everyone hard at work. We learn about the sections of the orchestra, the definition of the word, we learn about the overture, the conductor, the composer, the lyricist and we hear little vignettes from Carol Channing, Sid Ramin, and Lowell Jay Hershey. This is one marvelous way to learn all about the workings of the theater!

This amazing book shows just how bright the lights are on Broadway. When I first picked up the book, I didn't notice for a few pages that it was actually an ABC book of the theater. This book is very vibrant and, after I started playing the CD track "I Was Here," the whole atmosphere of the theater itself came alive as I read. This would be an excellent book for everyone, not just a young person to learn about what goes on in the theater. I loved the busy, busy, busy pages and the numerous quotations from actors and others such as stage designers that added immeasurably to the exciting aura this book creates. Want to learn about what goes on in the theater? This would make a perfect choice!

Amazing way to teach children about Broadway - L. Ragsdale - Orange County, CA
This book is amazing! The ABC's of Broadway with comments by people who have appeared/worked on Broadway. It is a great way to teach children about Broadway plays. What's more, it comes with a CD that has Brian Stokes Mitchell singing and a portion of the proceeds benefits The Actor's Fund (a charity that supports people in the industry). If you have children at home, I highly recommend this book. If you don't, I still recommend this book (especially if you like Broadway).

THE BEST BROADWAY BOOK WRITTEN FOR ALL - Kay M. Everett - CONROE, TX.
I GAVE THIS BOOK TO TWO VERY SPECIAL PEOPLE THIS SEASON. THE FIRST ONE WAS MY DAUGHTER WHO SPENT HER LIFE ON THE STAGE AS A NYC ROCKETTE AND IN BROADWAY SHOWS. SHE HAS SINCE MARRIED, HAS HER FIRST CHILD AND THE BOOK WAS FOR HIM. I WANTED MY GRANDCHILD TO LOVE AND UNDERTAND THE THEATER AS WE DO. MY DAUGHTER KNOWS MICHAEL AND WAS THRILLED TO RECEIVE THIS WONDERFUL BOOK.

THE SECOND BOOK WENT TO A LIFELONG FRIEND WHO WAS A PROFESSIONAL BALLERINA AND SHE ALSO IS MARRIED WITH THREE BEAUTIFUL CHILDREN. SHE WAS SO EMOTIONAL ABOUT THE BOOK THAT ALL SHE COULD DO WAS CRY. LOVED IT, LOVED IT, LOVED IT. YOU KNOW, ONCE YOU'VE BEEN THERE, THAT'S WHERE YOUR HEART STAYS. THANK YOU MICHAEL FOR WRITING SUCH A DETAILED BOOK ABOUT THE STAGE AND ALL THE WONDERFUL THINGS INVOLVED WITH IT.

WILL GIVE THE BOOK TO AS MANY FRIENDS AS I CAN THAT ALSO LOVE THE THEATER.

What a great way to introduce a young audience to Broadway! - Lisa Barker -
What a great way to introduce a young audience to Broadway! Even though this is in ABC format, older children new to the experience will appreciate the facts and trivia in this informative collection. As brilliant and exciting as Broadway itself, Lights on Broadway plunges the reader into an experience that dazzles. Prepare your child (or class) with this book for an upcoming visit to Broadway. Set the tone and spark the imagination of your children/class with this book and then create your own Broadway show.

This is one of my favorite 'doodle' books. It's very funny and original and just plain fun. I do illustration work and this book can really get me started. I also get great ideas for art classes and for my own children. This is really one of the best art books I know. It also brings home the point that drawings that are not realistic can sometimes show the essence of the subject better. Behind the Curtain CD: An Echo Falls Mystery (Echo Falls Mysteries) Review

Once again Peter Abrahams returns to the world of Echo Falls, where young Ingrid Levin-Hill is just trying to get by, navigating the slippery slopes of being a kid in the 21st century. While basically she's got a warm and protective family, there's always some friction going on, just like real life. In this book Ty's problem with anabolic steroids becomes more and more the center of Ingrid's worries. She notices things about him her mom and dad are just to preoccupied to see, or too blind, for they're proud of him and his success in organized sport in school.

Meanwhile her dad, who as we all remember works for a corporation owned by the richest man in town, feels threatened by the incursion of a new, chic, blonde dynamo who's become thisclose to the boss. Ferrand's not only wealthy, but evil, and Ingrid wouldn't put it past him to dump her dad in favor of this new executive woman, Julia LeCaine, who as it happens is also the new coach of her soccer team and sort of ruthless. At 99 Maple Lane everyone's got a secret (except Mom, and I bet that will be in the next book in the series) and the gorgeous scenery of Echo Falls is often ironically counterpointed to the nasty behavior of its human residents.

Grampy (Aylmer Hill) is still alive, though he's sinking, and his farm is under siege from developers led by the same Ferrand Group that his son-in-law works for. It would be a great coup for Dad in the company if he was the one who secured the land away from Grampy. Ingrid doesn't want to see that happen.

In the middle of all this, she is falling in love, not a huge passionate love but a solid friendship with Joey Strade, the solid son of the town's Police Chief. Ingrid doesn't really know how she feels about that! Peter Abrahams weaves all these threads into a fantastic thriller for kids of all ages. Ingrid's love of Conan Doyle and the Sherlock Holmes stories guides her through a world of trouble. "As Ho;mes told Watson," she reminds herself, "Never trust to general impressions, my boy, but concentrate yourself upon details." I rate this book higher than DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE and, unlike the other reviewers here who claim they knew the answer to the mystery right away, I was honestly baffled and shocked by the multiple endings. What will be next for Ingrid? "An Awfully Big Adventure"? Without a doubt.

Behind the Curtain CD: An Echo Falls Mystery (Echo Falls Mysteries) Overview

In Echo Falls you never know what's coming next -- and everyone has a secret. Things are amiss at 99 Maple Lane: Ingrid's dad's job is in jeopardy, but h e won't explain why. Ingrid's brother, Ty, is getting buff -- really buff -- but when Ty starts getting moody, Ingrid wonders if there's more to his physical fitness than lifting weights. Meanwhile, Ingrid's beloved soccer coach is replaced by an icy newcomer named Julia LeCaine, who seems a little too savvy to be in it for the postgame pizza. True to her hero, Sherlock Holmes, Ingrid begins fishing around to find out who's really pulling the strings in Echo Falls. But one morning, while en route to the dreaded MathFest, Ingrid is kidnapped and locked in the trunk of a car. Even if she escapes, will anyone believe her story?

In this sequel to Down the Rabbit Hole a clever young girl learns that mysterious forces are at work in her town -- and exposing them could put her life in jeopardy.

I am now officially hooked - Alissa - NJ
Behind the Curtain is the second book in Peter Abrahams' Echo Falls series, which I am now completely hooked on. It joins The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency and the Agatha Raisin series in my unofficial mysteries to listen to in the car list. Thirteen year-old Ingrid makes a wonderful amateur detective, but as she is also a thirteen year-old girl she makes plenty of mistakes along the way. Although Behind the Curtain does pick up on some clues dropped in Down the Rabbit Hole, the first book in the series, it works just fine as a standalone book.

Good mystery with clever references to Sherlock Holmes and Wizard of Oz - Gomerel - Fantasyland
The title refers to The Wizard of Oz. Ingrid is playing Dorothy in a school production. Also, symbolically, in real life. Just reading the cover you can guess who the wicked witch is. And it doesn't take long to figure out who's the Wizard behind the curtain. I haven't read or seen Oz for a long time, and I'm not great with symbolism, so I'm not sure who the Lion, Tin Man, Scarecrow, etc. are.

Yes, it was pretty obvious who the bad guys were and what was happening "behind the curtain" early on. Didn't bother me at all.

The Soccer Playing Sleuth - Cheryl Morgen - Oregon
Behind the Curtain is the second book featuring thirteen year old Ingrid. This mystery series is set in the small town of Echo Falls. Ingrid seems to be your typical middle school student who likes playing soccer, acting in plays, and eating ice cream. She is not too thrilled with school, math class in particular, but loves Sherlock Holmes. She is very good at observing small details like Holmes, her hero. It is through observing various oddities, like her dad throwing away the newspaper or her brother's increasing acne, that she begins to realize all is not well in her house.

Peter Abrahams does a good job of keeping the story moving and interesting while also interspersing it with the mundane things that a young teen must do such as homework or a trip to the orthodontist. The mysteries are convoluted enough to be intriguing, yet there are an abundance of clues so that an astute reader could figure them out. The issues Ingrid ends up investigating are pretty serious and do not necessarily have feel good happy endings. There are a few loose ends left at the end of the book: Why was Grampy at the hospital? Why was Chloe so upset? Hopefully these will be addressed in the next edition of the Echo Falls mystery series. I'm looking forward to it.

We are homeschoolers using this book in part of a unit on Inventors. My eight year old is able to read and enjoy the history behind the different inventions. I thought it would just be a "how to" book, but we are both really enjoying the well written historical information in this book. It really makes Leonardo and the world he lived in come alive. I like to just browse through the book and look at all of Leonardo's sketches as well.

The pictures and instructions are fairly easy to follow. The inventions do use common items, but we don't always have the right "common" items at the right times. We have modified most of the directions to use what we actually have in our house. Today we wanted to make the camera obscura, but we just threw out our last empty Pringles can... guess we'll be eating lots of chips in the next week :)

Grandson Delighted! - DocGoodbyte - Blue Ridge Mtns.
My grandson requested some da Vinci readings and I found this project book that went through some of the inventions that were buildable. He was delighted!

Inspiring - sweet pea - La Mirada, CA
We received this book within five days, and before the sun set that afternoon, my nine-year-old grandson had constructed three sizes of the trebuchet by following the instructions.

Great Book! - Andrea D. Lopez - San Antonio, TX United States
I purchased this book after I saw the "Leonardo di Vinci" exhibit at my local museum. This particular exhibt showcased his inventions, not his artwork. There were many full size replicas of machines that he thought of that were actually built for this exhibit. I was intrigued by the bridge that could be built with just a few stick and got stronger the more weight you put on it. After putting the dowel sized replica together at the exhibit, I had to have one for myself to build. That's the primary reason I purchased this book. Now that I have it in my hands, I've been going over the different activities I can do with my baby siblings, and I'm so excited I have this book in hand. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in "how things work" and science in general.

Amazing Leonardo da Vinci Inventions You Can Build Yourself (Build It Yourself series) - Joseph A. Degraff - San Antonio, TX
I purchased this book as a cross curricular lesson. Although I teach science there is history, strategies, art, and exposure to building simple machines. I am using the book to make shoe box activities for me students and update myself on the wonders of Leonardo.

Bambi Review

I have not read this entire book. I thought I was getting the story of the deer. This is not the story of the Deer, That would be Bambi by Felix Salten. This book is about a young adult named Bambina (Bambi for short). Five stars are indicated simply to keep from judging the story wrongly since I have not yet read it.
