Duck Ellington Swings Through the Zoo: Baby Loves Jazz Review

My baby loved this CD from day one. He loves it from start to finish. He sings and dances along. I play this when he is grumpy and it seems to be very calming for him. He listens intently to the spoken words and the instrument sounds. He loves the book as well.

The combination is excellent for his development and music appreciation.

My 19-month old daughter loves these books (and the CDs) although she's enjoyed them since she was around 6 months old. I recommend them highly. And my husband and I enjoy reading them to her (which can't be said for every board book out there).

Only 16 pages!! - Ursula K. Raphael - USA
And only 14 are actual activity pages. I feel like a fool for spending nearly on this book...Brighter Child® Preschool Learning Activities had much more to offer at a lower price -- but I bought this for my child, who is a huge Max & Ruby fan. He loved it.

The entire activity book is based on the episode in which Ruby & Louise are trying to paint Max's portrait, but he keeps running off. The contents are:
pages 2-3 coloring
pages 4-5 matching
page 6 counting
page 7 blank page to draw on
pages 8-9 hidden pictures, also has folded poster in middle (about 18"x30" in size): just an oversized coloring page
page 10 matching
page 11 coloring
page 12 maze
page 13 sight words/tracing: boat, cake, truck, snake, wagon
pages 14-15 coloring
page 16 answer key

It follows the actual TV episode pretty accurately, so you do get a story, but you would be better off just buying some reading books like Max's Easter Surprise or Bunny Fairy Tales for your Max & Ruby fan.

Overpriced item - Constance Keogh -
This item was thoroughly overpriced. Very skimpy, very few pages to color. Definitely not worth purchasing. I would not have purchased this item had I had an opportunity to view the contents.

Art Review

We received this book as a birthday present for our 3-year-old son. The hardcover edition is a very elegant looking book with what appear to be watercolor and ink illustrations. This is not a text-heavy book--some pages have a dozen or fewer words--and it is perfectly suitable for a 2-4 year old. I will add that I and my older kids (10 and 11) thoroughly enjoy reading it with the little guy as well. It is the story of a boy named Art and the different kinds of art he creates (lines, squggles, stars, etc.). The story, as it exists, does not have much too it, other than to demonstrate that art can be created by even a little boy and that his acts of creation engage his imagination and expand his world. The conclusion is really the cherry on top of a lovely book for young children to enjoy. While the storys and presentation are very different, my enjoyment of this book reminded me of when I first discovered Guess How Much I Love You (with the two little nut-brown hare rabbits), about 10 years ago. That franchise appears to have become bigger than life--perhaps over-exposed, I don't know--but the gentle, warm story made a great impression on us at the time. ART has had a similar effect. A great find for anyone looking for a book for 0-3 and above.

I agree w/ the elementary teacher who commented about 'grownup art not being sufficient if Mcdonnell's celebrating children's art'. It was my first reaction when I saw the images (I'm also a teacher).

HOWEVER, since this book makes no claims to be original children's art, I can love this book unconditionally. I read through it and I have to say that the book is beautiful. It echoes children's art, the freedom and joy of movement even though it's drawn by a seasoned artist. In this way does Mcdonnell celebrate children's art even if he cannot recreate it. The world created in the book is as whimsical as any story I've watched pre-K kids create. The narration is beautiful.

I love this book and have added it to my personal collection.

Check Out Pride and Prejudice for $21.99

Pride and Prejudice Review

I might be wasting the readers time on things that really spread no knowledge of the book reviewed. I'll not spend words telling you the story, describing the characters or the time, offering opinions on the social state of Britain at the time of the novel. There are other reviews that attempt this. Jane Austen is much better at these tasks than I. The reviewer is an anglophobe. If it is given five stars here it should tell you a great deal about the value of this novel. For one who protects what is left of vision to read this book three times should say even more. It is strongly suggested reader that you uit wasting time on reviews and read the book. You may believe from the title of this review that the reviewer is prejudiced. What took you so long to figure that out? Age and other afflictions of the eyes have robbed my ability to read to some degree but this edition is very kind to us ancients. Oxford has a good reputation and this publication will not detract from it. The editorial material is even somewhat amusing. There is nothing amusing about the War of 1812, the use of the wordswhere we Americans would more likely use is symbolic of the British conception of our republic. But we digress. Austen has been a favorite since I first encountered her in college. It was much later I realized one reason for the fine prose in Hiram Grant's Memoirs. He spent many hours at West Point reading Jane Austen novels. There he was given his more familiar name Ulyses Grant, hero of the Civil War and Republican president of the U. S. Had he spent his time reading the French tacticians as his classmates did the war may have been prolonged to allow McClellan to beat his opponents.

Pride and Prejudice Specifications

"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife."

Next to the exhortation at the beginning of Moby-Dick, "Call me Ishmael," the first sentence of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice must be among the most quoted in literature. And certainly what Melville did for whaling Austen does for marriage--tracing the intricacies (not to mention the economics) of 19th-century British mating rituals with a sure hand and an unblinking eye. As usual, Austen trains her sights on a country village and a few families--in this case, the Bennets, the Philips, and the Lucases. Into their midst comes Mr. Bingley, a single man of good fortune, and his friend, Mr. Darcy, who is even richer. Mrs. Bennet, who married above her station, sees their arrival as an opportunity to marry off at least one of her five daughters. Bingley is complaisant and easily charmed by the eldest Bennet girl, Jane; Darcy, however, is harder to please. Put off by Mrs. Bennet's vulgarity and the untoward behavior of the three younger daughters, he is unable to see the true worth of the older girls, Jane and Elizabeth. His excessive pride offends Lizzy, who is more than willing to believe the worst that other people have to say of him; when George Wickham, a soldier stationed in the village, does indeed have a discreditable tale to tell, his words fall on fertile ground.

Having set up the central misunderstanding of the novel, Austen then brings in her cast of fascinating secondary characters: Mr. Collins, the sycophantic clergyman who aspires to Lizzy's hand but settles for her best friend, Charlotte, instead; Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Mr. Darcy's insufferably snobbish aunt; and the Gardiners, Jane and Elizabeth's low-born but noble-hearted aunt and uncle. Some of Austen's best comedy comes from mixing and matching these representatives of different classes and economic strata, demonstrating the hypocrisy at the heart of so many social interactions. And though the novel is rife with romantic misunderstandings, rejected proposals, disastrous elopements, and a requisite happy ending for those who deserve one, Austen never gets so carried away with the romance that she loses sight of the hard economic realities of 19th-century matrimonial maneuvering. Good marriages for penniless girls such as the Bennets are hard to come by, and even Lizzy, who comes to sincerely value Mr. Darcy, remarks when asked when she first began to love him: "It has been coming on so gradually, that I hardly know when it began. But I believe I must date it from my first seeing his beautiful grounds at Pemberley." She may be joking, but there's more than a little truth to her sentiment, as well. Jane Austen considered Elizabeth Bennet "as delightful a creature as ever appeared in print". Readers of Pride and Prejudice would be hard-pressed to disagree. --Alix Wilber

Reviews don't apply to the audio book - KJ -
Amazon has started lumping together all of the reviews for the various versions of a title, even if the review doesn't pertain to that particular version. The review by Forestlawn, above, is a prime example. Their review has to do, apparently, with a 48 page printed book, and not the audio book which appears on this page. The audio book is wonderful, and is unabridged. I hope Amazon stops this foolishness, and separates the reviews for the individual formats for which they are intended.

It's not appropriate for all categories! - Maurice Chevalier -
How does this novel end up in every category? I search Fiction, it's there - okay, it's droll, but it's an okay novel, and it fits the genre. So then I search humor, and it's listed twice. "Hmm," I think, "it's not that funny, but it has its moments." Freakin Home & Lifestyle?! Now they're just being funny. I don't have a drawing room, Amazon, so you're not doing me any favors. Time to sort out the categories.

Come Rack! Come Rope! Review

Five stars just isn't enough for this incredible classic! This is my most favorite book of all time by my most favorite author of all time!! Robert Benson's incredible talent of words creates lively and realistic characters, events, descriptions, and dialogue. This book is based on real events but the characters are fictional. This is an engrossing and thrilling read. If you love romance, action, suspense, twists and turns, you will love this book!! I could hardly put it down when I read it! I fell in love with the characters and I was literally in tears at the end of the book with true feelings of joy and saddness! You'll have to read it to find out why!

I'm now reading another of Msgr. Benson's works entitled "By What Authority" which is just as enthralling and captivating! I can't wait to see how it ends...

Come Rack, Come Rope - Clare - Eagle River, AK
Great book, but unfortunately it is not as good as LORD OF THE WORLD by the same author - and I read that first. Still, it is a gender neutral book in the sense that men and women can enjoy it. And over the years, I feel most books are written for the female audience mostly.

Engrossing - Schmerguls - Sioux City, Ia USA
This account of Catholics enduring persecution in Elizabethan England is filled with true events, only the central characters being fictional. I found the terror thru which the protagonists lived to be chilling, and the ending is unforgettable. While the book was published in 1912 it still resonates with anyone who opposes religious persecution, and inspires admiration for the heroic men who sought to serve the Catholics being subjected to the religious intolerance of Queen Elizabeth and her minions. A rewarding reading experience.

Great book, and I apologize for my earlier bad review! - Christine A. Lehman - Los Angeles, CA United States
I originally gave this a rating of 3 stars because I had it confused with another book by the same author and thought somethign was missing from this edition. My apologies! It is a good book all on its own, about a sad period in Christendom when Protestants and Catholics were LITERALLY at each other's throats. These days we're pretty much satisfied with ripping each other's entrails out in virtual reality - those days they did it for real!!

Check Out I Pledge Allegiance for $5.98

I Pledge Allegiance Review

Very well-written book. It could use more historical information about the topic addressed. For example, the early Pledge of Allegiance was the origin of the stiff-arm salute. The Pledge was written (1892) by Francis Bellamy, cousin to an infamous author of the time, Edward Bellamy, and they were both self-proclaimed socialists in the Nationalism movement and promoted military socialism. They wanted government to take over all schools and impose robotic chanting to flags. The Pledge was the origin of the salute of the National Socialist German Workers Party. American socialists (Edward Bellamy teamed with the Theosophical Society) also bear some blame for German socialism's notorious flag symbol, which evolved into overlapping S-letters for socialism under the National Socialist German Workers Party. The Pledge's early salute was not an ancient Roman salute, and the 'ancient Roman salute' myth came from the Pledge Of Allegiance. It is amazing that books don't examine the issue of whether the pledge should be dropped entirely, especially for young children in government schools. The socialist dogma led to the socialist Wholecost: 60 million dead under the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics; 50 million under the Peoples' Republic of China; 20 million under the National Socialist German Workers Party. It might be the most tragic part of world history.

I Pledge Allegiance Overview

Divides the Pledge of Allegiance into words and phrases in order to define its meaning.

I Pledge Allegiance Specifications

Whether kids want to recite the Pledge of Allegiance or respectfully decline, this straightforward and playfully illustrated guide clears up what the pledge really means--word by word, and line by line.

Two pledge-loving literacy experts (Michael Sampson and Bill Martin, Jr.) and one polite pledge-abstainer (Caldecott Honor-winning illustrator Chris Raschka) have come together to explicate America's time-honored oath in plain, kid-friendly language: "I pledge (A pledge is a promise) allegiance to (Allegiance is loyalty) the flag (A flag is a symbol that stands for a place, a thing, or an idea. Making a promise to a flag usually means the same thing as making a promise to whatever the flag stands for.)." Sampson and Martin's annotations adequately convey the essential meaning behind the words, although understandably less so in the thornier sections: "under God (Many people believe that a democracy is a reflection of how God thinks--every single person is important.)"

I Pledge Allegiance also covers some of the history behind the pledge and the flag, but what kids will probably remember best--aside from the pledge itself--is Raschka's clever, winning collage work, which somehow manages to sum up ideas like liberty, justice, and God with a few quick strokes and scraps. I Pledge Allegiance - L. Miller -
Wonderful Book! This is a great way to teach little kids what the meaning of the flag is to our great country. My 5 year old and 2 year old are already reciting the pledge.

It already has 50 stars - MEJ - Cowlesville, NY
I think this is a nice book to teach a child the pledge of allegiance and to explain to them what the pledge means. This book breaks down the meaning of each word and explains them in a way that children can understand. It gives the history of the pledge, a little about the flag, what to do while saying the pledge and touches on what this great country is all about. From other reviews I have read, it appears that Francis Bellamy, who authored the pledge, did not include the line "...under God". Nonetheless, it was included in this book and is the version of the pledge that I recited every morning during my school years...and it is the version I will teach my daughter.

Noble try. - -
The goal--nicely attempted--of breaking down each line of this too-difficult-for-the-kids-who-have-to-say-it speech falls short.

While they explain the large words in kid-friendly phrases and credit Francis Bellamy, they make the significant omission of the fact that Bellamy DID NOT write the phrase "under God," and that it was added without his permission. The text says, "Many people believe that a democracyis a reflection of how God thinks..." without mentioning that the pledge, in its current form, misquotes its author.

A book that is designed to clear things up should be more accurate. Nonetheless, the illustrations are eye-catching and the language accessible to kids. It's a good idea to give them a better understanding than their often-quoted, "I led the pigeons to the flag..."

Check Out The Lion King

The Lion King Review

ISBN 2894332513 (5 stars) - This is now the third Disney version of The Lion King that I've read, I thought I'd found the best of them in 0307127923. I stand corrected with this one. Although it's small, nearly pocket sized, and it's one of those "novelties", with a pillowed hardcover, this edition is better than the rest (so far!). For the sake of comparison I will, again, merge the reviews.

This third edition is, by far, the smoothest flowing storytelling I've found to date. Leaving out almost nothing, from the beginning to the end, it captures every important moment, running them fluidly together. This makes a much more complete and easy to follow - and enjoy! - story. Brimar's edition seems to be author-less, sadly, so it won't be possible for me to hunt down anything else from the writer - which is only one of two negatives I can find here. The other is that the text is a little small and the font not great.

The first edition I reviewed: ISBN 0717283534 (4 stars) - This is the Disney's Wonderful World of Reading edition of The Lion King. Because there are so many, and they vary so much, I think it's important not to confuse them. Some parents might be reluctant to introduce their child to the story because of the murder of Simba's father and the later killing of Scar. If that's a concern for you, this book might be best passed by for now.

The illustrations are absolutely beautiful, even a step above Disney's usual standard excellence. The story is very slightly disjointed because it's condensed, but the high points are covered and those who have seen the movie will have no trouble following. On the other hand, those who haven't seen the movie might not even notice what's missing! Either way, a chance to read with your child should never be missed and a wonderful Disney tale is always worthwhile.

ISBN 0307127923 (5 stars) - This is the second version of Disney's The Lion King that I've read. All three tell the same story, but this one is a bit better. Hover's adaptation includes more detail and flows more smoothly. The illustrations by the team of Judy Barnes and Robbin Cuddy are very good and the mood of the moment is captured in fantastic colors.

Simba's birth is cause for celebration in the jungle - the future king is presented to one and all, and all show up. Except, that is, Scar. Scar is Simba's uncle, brother of King Mufasa and, until Simba's birth, next in line for the throne. Scar hatches several plans to get rid of Simba and reclaim his place, finally resorting to killing his brother and encouraging Simba to give in to his guilt and run away.

Befriended by Timon and Pumbaa, Simba grows to his full size. He misses his loved ones and, thanks to a chance encounter with his childhood friend Nala and the guidance of Rafiki, Simba returns home to take back his place as king.

not great for the littlest kids - SusanPhD -
Of course this is a great story- but this abridged version doesnt quite flow if you dont already know the story.
The language is also a little 'old'. I have to censor it a bit for my 3 year old. The Disney pictures however are great, and if you have the energy to 'tell' the story rather than 'read' it then this works great.

Cute for the purpose of introducing Disney characters - skrapbooker -
This is a cute board book for the purpose of introducing Disney characters. It's a VERY condensed version of the Lion King story. My son is 2 & it's condensed to an age-appropriate level of words to listen to. However, the story is so condensed that it's really not that interesting as a story. My son does like it though... but you would only buy this book if you really want to introduce the characters to your child (especially if you were taking a trip to Disney soon). The story itself is not that fascinating. However, my son does like to see the zebras, giraffes, ostriches, etc.
