The Sixty-Eight Rooms Review

I am not sure if this just wasn't a book for me. I generally love reading childrens books, because they must really focus on the storyline without all the added "junk" that adult books usually add. I had a hard time reading the book despite the premise of the book being so interesting. I think everyone as a child wishes they could shrink down to toy size to investigate doll houses or whatever they were interested in. I slogged through the book and then passed the book to my 14-year-old daughter, who loved the book. While she is a bit above the age for the book, she loves books with great stories. She thought that it would be a great book for readers at 4th grade to 6th grade reading levels. She also said she didn't think that boys would enjoy this book to much as it mostly has to do with doll houses. Overall it is a good book.

The Sixty-Eight Rooms Overview

Almost everybody who has grown up in Chicago knows about the Thorne Rooms. Housed in the Children’s Galleries of the Chicago Art Institute, they are a collection of 68 exquisitely crafted miniature rooms made in the 1930s by Mrs. James Ward Thorne. Each of the 68 rooms is designed in the style of a different historic period, and every detail is perfect, from the knobs on the doors to the candles in the candlesticks. Some might even say, the rooms are magic.

Imagine—what if you discovered a key that allowed you to shrink so that you were small enough to sneak inside and explore the rooms’ secrets? What if you discovered that others had done so before you? And that someone had left something important behind?

Fans of Chasing Vermeer, The Doll People, and From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler will be swept up in the magic of this exciting art adventure!

not bad but not great either children's book - LawrenceSvetlana - USA
Children's adventure book for 3-4 graders. I loved the concept of the book, the plot, the ending, but it was just not exciting enough. I could predict a lot of what was going to happen. It was like someone made grand plans for the characters and the plot and they kind of did not turn out so exciting after all. Better tnan letting your child watch TV, but would not be my choice of a gift to any child I know.

Nice concept but was very slow moving - LS - SF Bay Area
I read this with my 10 year old 4th grader daughter. We got through about 2/3rds before I finally gave up making her read it with me. I think both boys are girls would feel the same about this book. For the most part kids that are very interested and have been to the Art Institute and seen the rooms or are very interested in doll houses might enjoy this book. For the rest it is probably too slow of a pace to keep most kids in the target age range interested.

THE SIXTY-EIGHT ROOMS is guilty of some common faults of first novels - Kidsreads.com - New York, NY
My grandparents lived in a suburb of Chicago. When I was younger (and, frankly, even today), a visit to the Windy City just didn't seem complete without a trip to the Art Institute of Chicago and, in particular, to its beloved Thorne Rooms. Unlike more traditional museum "period rooms," the Thorne Rooms are compellingly detailed recreations in miniature, each one appearing like a window not only into another time but into another, smaller dimension. The light-infused dioramas, their exquisite detail and their evocatively painted backdrops are like invitations to imagine yourself in another world.

Apparently, Marianne Malone was also inspired by the imaginative draw of the Thorne Rooms. This debut novelist, who lives near Chicago, has set THE SIXTY-EIGHT ROOMS in the Art Institute, as Ruthie and her friend Jack discover that the rooms are actually magical. When the two come across a mysterious key, they soon learn that Ruthie seems to have a mysterious, magical connection to that key. When she touches it, she shrinks down to a size that would allow her to roam around the Thorne Rooms at just the right scale, sitting at the miniature chairs, tucking herself into the elaborate canopied beds, playing the tiny instruments and opening the miniscule desk drawers.

Ruthie and Jack, who have discovered how to access the maintenance corridor behind the rooms, soon hatch a plan to stay overnight at the museum and explore the rooms more carefully. They also discover a method that allows Jack (who doesn't share Ruthie's connection to the magical key) to shrink as well. But what will happen if they venture outside the rooms, head out beyond the painted backdrops with outdoor scenes and into the miniature, historical world outside? Will they meet people from other times?

THE SIXTY-EIGHT ROOMS has an unusual but understandable premise, one that has surely occurred to anyone who has seen the Thorne Rooms and wondered what it might be like to inhabit those tiny, perfectly appointed, often luxurious spaces. Malone's novel also participates in a storied tradition of children's books set in and inspired by museums, from FROM THE MYSTERIOUS FILES OF MRS. BASIL E. FRANKWEILER to CHASING VERMEER and MASTERPIECE. However, this book injects a supernatural or fantasy element that will appeal to many readers.

At times, THE SIXTY-EIGHT ROOMS is guilty of some common faults of first novels (especially ones for young readers), namely an overuse of exclamation points to indicate enthusiasm or danger. It also suffers occasionally from a lack of cohesion in its plot; although their interactions with figures from the past are limited to a couple of significant exchanges that ultimately have implications for the plot, they can also seem disconnected and unrelated.

Of course, one could point out that the children's adventures are kind of like the rooms themselves --- freely roaming among historical periods and geographical locales that, on the surface of things, might seem like a random assortment. Jack and Ruthie's adventures are certainly compelling, and you can bet that many lucky readers --- their own imaginations inspired by the novel --- will be begging their parents to make a field trip to Chicago.

The Merchant of Venice (Oxford School Shakespeare Series) Review

Please note that at the time Shakespeare wrote The Merchant of Venice, Jews had not lived in England for over 300 years having been expelled in 1290 and the expulsion decree not overturned until 1656, fifty years after the publication of the play. What I think this shows is that anti-Semitism thrives in an envirornment of ignorance: it is easier to despise someone at a distance and turn them into a monster in your imagination, whereas if you had to interact with them regularly you would see that the stereotypes break down and are not actually true.

The fact that a genius of the stature of Shakespeare was not immune to this syndrome should not be surprising, he was after all a product of his culture and played to his audience who harbored these ideas, and he may have thought he was holding a mirror up to the society in order to display the ugliness of anti-Semitism.

The Merchant of Venice (Oxford School Shakespeare Series) Overview

The new editions contain new sections: Classwork and Examinations and Background to Shakespeare's England . There are also short sections on Date and Text, and Source. This book is intended for age 14 - 16.

Not much to say. I received the book on time in the condition explained.

Oxford edition has wonderful notes, and is great to read - Matthew T. Phillips - Winston-Salem, NC USA
It seems to me it is more helpful to rate and review the edition than the play itself, and this edition is superb. Along with the other Oxford Shakespeare books, this one has outstanding notes that are presented in such a way as to be easy to glance at while reading without breaking rhythm too much. I have found that each time I think to myself, "I don't quite understand," there is a note on point that sets me back on the right track. There are also high-quality but very accessible essays and background information provided after the text of the play.

Every time I'm going to read a Shakespearean play, I look for a version in this series; it is certainly worth a couple extra dollars or the frustration of reading from different page numbers than classmates if you are reading for a class.

Star Wars Complete Cross-Sections: The Spacecraft and Vehicles of the Entire Star Wars Saga Review

Take one look at the oversized "cross-sections" books on the shelf at the bookstore, and you're likely to move on. Don't; each huge, intricately-detailed drawing is breathtaking. The Herculean labor required for these works is obvious on each page. Illustrators Hans Jenssen and Richard Chasemore paid their dues for the privilege of working on the project: "We illustrated boring stuff, like plumbing and water pumps..." Jenssen recalled ruefully. The result? You find yourself staring deeper and deeper into the layers of detail on each design. It rewards you with additional insights with each viewing.

By the way, the Cross-Sections books were originally sold separately for Episodes I-III and IV-VI respectively. Buying the Complete Cross-Sections compendium here is a better buy.

this is a great book and my [...] years old son and husband love it. It goes into details on all the space ships and is very informative. The only drawback is that it is such a big book. My son wanted to bring it with him to grandma's house but it just too big of a book to take on the plane.

One of the Laziest Plots I've Ever Read - G. Misc -
After the enormous praise Stephen King heaped upon this book, I decided to pick it up and see what all the fuss was about.

The novel starts off quite well, with a quick pace and an interesting protagonist. The prose is written in a form of contemporary shorthand that mimics the fragmented (and often, grammatically incorrect) thoughts of a young teen, and this works well, to a point. Those looking for pretty prose should look elsewhere.

Things quickly go sour, though. The murder plot, after its terrific setup, is left to drag for hundreds of pages with nary an interesting spike in the story until very nearly the end. Instead we get plenty of needless, pointless side characters and convoluted "clues" that really don't help us solve this mystery. The book spins its wheels page after page after page, leaving you to wonder just why you picked this thing up in the first place. But you keep reading because the writing is frills-free, making it easy to get through a page in about 30 seconds.

Then we get the fast, dirty conclusion where the killer is revealed, and...it is exactly who you thought it would be the entire time. Why? Because there aren't any other suspects in the book. The moment this character enters the page, you know he (or she) is up to no good by the shiftiness with which Abrahams imbues him. In sharper mystery stories, the author will create a character such as this as a red herring, an obvious villain who in the end doesn't turn out to be the antagonist after all. But not in Down the Rabbit Hole. Nope, there really is only one suspect given to us, and he (or she!) is it. Just lazy.

I finished the novel extremely irritated and literally dropped the book on the ground, so disgusted was I at the utter lack of thought that went into it. It's a joke. It's lazy. Don't drink the water.

Too hard to believe the protoganist is a 13 yr old. - P. Brooks - Chapel Hill, NC USA
Parents beware, this book details a 13 yr old who commits many crimes, lies to her parents, cuts school, lies to the police, recklessly endangers herself many times, and has few qualms regarding any of her behavior. And in fact, no negative consequences.
Listened to the audio version with my 13 yr old daughter, she agreed that it was unrealistic.

Skip it... - T. Miller - WV
This "mystery" is incredibly simplistic. Any reader over the age of 10 will probably figure it out long before the end. It's also pretty unrealistic. How many things can happen to one kid...and her parents NEVER find out?!? There are much better books out there for young adults. Skip this one.

The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World Review

The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World Overview

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon. The Colossus of Rhodes. The Great Pyra-mid at Giza. For centuries these names have inspired wonder and mystery. They are but three of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Most of these masterpieces of human achievement have long since crumbled into dust. But their legacy survives, and these triumphs of human vision, architecture, and creativity have become the stuff of legends.

In the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, Lynn Curlee ponders the questions that have fascinated researchers and archaeologists for decades: What purpose did these structures have for the societies that built them? How did they achieve the means necessary to construct such intricate and innovative temples and statues? Mr. Curlee investigates and illustrates how these Seven Wonders must have appeared at their peak.

With extraordinary paintings and a moving narrative, Mr. Curlee tells the story of some of man?s greatest feats and explores the timeless desire of cultures to leave a permanent mark on the Earth.

Great Price Klutz for $11.79

Boom! Splat! Kablooey!: Safe Science That's a Real Blast (Klutz) Review

Kids like to make noise and make messes. If it's a noisy mess or a messy noise, there are big bonus points. With this simple truth in mind, the eccentrics of Klutz Press have put together "Boom! Splat! Kablooey!"

But this book is a base deception. Kids think this is just about fun stuff like a little plastic jar that makes noise again and again, popping ballons, or making a huge mess with soda and salt, but these subversives at Klutz are inflicting science upon them. While the big, fun looking print talks about noise and mess, the finer print explains the science behind it. With books like this floating around, the little mess and noise makers will actually *learn* something. Worse yet, they might be inspired to go learning more from other books. If they really pay attention, they might learn enough to come up with new noise and mess making ideas, but they probably won't learn as much about cleaning up.

Kids will love this one. They'll learn from it, even when they don't expect to. They might even be inspired to learn more. Then what will we be able to do with them?

E.M. Van Court

Boom! Splat! Kablooey!: Safe Science That's a Real Blast (Klutz) Overview

We asked kids what kind of science experiments they’d like to do, and they said: ""Blow stuff up."" We asked physicists what youthful experiences inspired them to become scientists, and they said: ""We blew stuff up."" We asked parents what they thought about kids and science and blowing stuff up, and they said: ""Is it safe?"" Sure, blowing up stuff is safe — with this book, that is. It comes with all the special equipment you need to make ordinary ingredients from your kitchen go boom in impressive, yet non-destructive, style. A Geyser Tube and a Depth Charge make table salt and a bottle of soda into a backyard geyser. A bevy of special balloons turns a regular pop into a big ol’ BOOM. And the Can of A Thousand Pops is specially designed to explode again and again and again and… you get the idea. At Klutz Labs, we’re dedicated to making the loudest (yet totally safe) booms, the most spectacular (yet totally safe) splats, and the most amazing (yet totally safe) kablooeys. We’re all charged up to get kids learning about science. And have a blast doing it.

Multiplication Rap & Hip-Hop Review

This product was recommended to me by a teacher who said it increased test scores for her class. My kids love to listen to this CD. It is now the preferred music selection in the car. The songs all have great rhythms and lyrics so the tape is easy to listen to over and over. We have been listening to this CD daily for three weeks and it is still fresh. Even I have a favorite - the five's song. The older Muliplication Rap tape by Twin Sisters should be retired because it is monotonous and boring. This tape is a hands down winner over any tape we tried!

AWESOME!!! - A. Macejunas - Tacoma, wa
I teach in an inner city school ..This CD raps, teaches strategies...sings the answer and then the 2nd time it sings the question and leaves students a wait time and a pause to give the answer. I love the stategies, different original songs. SUPER AWESOME for kids in the year 2007!!

Disappointed - T. Ward - San Antonio, TX
This CD was so highly rated that I couldn't wait to receive it. When it came, I was extremely disappointed. My niece (of whom I have custody) is struggling with her math facts for school, a necessary promotion standard, and we really need help, but she hates the songs, and quite frankly, so do I. I thought they'd be fun and catchy, but they are cheesey and tedious. The "Hip-Hop" claim is quite questionable. . . . We also purchased Schoolhouse Rock, and it is by far a better investment. Unfortunately, when buying a cd online, it is almost impossible to preview the songs, and so my recommendation is to check out your local music store first to make sure that the music is a match for your child.

Check Out Come Look with Me: Enjoying Art with Children (Come Look with Me) for $7.99

Come Look with Me: Enjoying Art with Children (Come Look with Me) Review

I used to be afraid of art until I bought this book and shared it with my 5-year-old daughter. I thought fine art was for the sophisticated -- certainly not for a regular person like me.

"Come Look with Me: Enjoying Art with Children" introduces kids to great works of art in a very gentle way. The whole point of beginning to enjoy art is simply to start looking at it. Each two-page spread covers one piece of art. On the left page is the print, nearly filling the page, with information about the artist, name of the piece, date, and where it is located (such as a gallery or private collection). The right-hand page has a few questions the parent can ask the child and discuss together, such as, "What do you think the child is looking at? What makes you think so?" and, "The artist used a lot of different lines in this painting. Find a straight line. ..."

There are no wrong answers. The questions are designed to get the children looking -- really looking -- at the art. Then at the bottom is a brief narrative about the artwork and the artist, explaining what is happening in the picture or how and why the artist created it. Each spread is an art appreciation lesson, without it ever feeling like a lesson. It's even easy for someone like me with no prior art background.

I like that this book starts author Gladys Blizzard's series of books with pictures of children, as it's easy for children to get into paintings of kids their own ages.

Now that I'm not afraid to look at art and take it all in, it's fun to explore it further. My daughter and I are able to talk about artwork we see. We talk about how it was created, what the artist might have been feeling, and we compare it to other art we have seen. I wish I had been exposed to art like this when I was 5 years old!

We started with this book and I have already purchased couple more in the series.

Some things we have done at home to extend the learning from this book: I bought an inexpensive table-top easel and set the book up in our living room, opened to the artwork we studied that week. Every time we walk by we can appreciate it even more and even notice new things. We add the artist's birth-death dates in a timeline we keep for history and geography. Once my daughter wanted to try to recreate one of the paintings, so we sketched it ourselves. One of my favorite moments as a homeschooling mother was when our family had the chance to go to the Art Institute of Chicago and see one of the paintings. We were able to enjoy it and talk about it intelligently. My daughter was not bored at the art gallery as I would have been at her age. She was fascinated, all thanks to "Come Look with Me!"

Come Look with Me: Enjoying Art with Children (Come Look with Me) Overview

COME LOOK WITH ME: Enjoying Art with Children is the first volume in the COME LOOK WITH ME series of interactive art books from Lickle Publishing. Each book in the series introduces children to twelve magnificent works of art. More importantly, they offer a whole new way of encountering any work of art, one that engages the imagination as much as the eye.

Well suited for both individual and classroom use, Enjoying Art with Children pairs quality art reproductions with thought-provoking questions, encouraging children to learn through visual exploration and interaction. Thoughtful text introduces the world and work of the artist, making the most of a child’s natural curiosity.

Children are invited to search out the details that bring works of art to life – the tattered sleeve of a street urchin in John Brown’s A Tough Story, and the rosy complexion of a young musician in Renoir’s Two Girls at the Piano.

Drawing from a wide-ranging selection of works of art, from Hans Holbein the Younger’s 16th century portrait of a one-year-old Edward VI, Edward VI as a Child, to Pablo Picasso’s 1938 study of his daughter with a sailor doll, Maya with a Doll, children explore the artwork with lessons in perspective, color, line, and even in the nature of creative freedom.

Engaging and interactive for both children and adults, Lickle Publishing’s COME LOOK WITH ME series celebrated what Mrs. Blizzard called the "pleasure of shared experience."

Well done - S. Scott - lebanon, pa
The artwork is accompanied by questions to get the viewer thinking. It works great with homeschool or for anytime.

Educational. Look at Art with Children - apoem - Bosque Farms, NM USA
This is a good book for adults and children. There is a picture on one page and on the next page there is a little bit of information about the picture and some questions to inspire thinking about the picture.

Examples of questions might be- what are the childrenn in this painting feeling? What makes you think so? What is the father in this painting thinking about?

This book inspires young children to look at pictures in a different way. It inspires them to put the story to the painting and to explore what the painting is trying to 'say'. Because of this it is a good introduction to art for young children.

Enjoy.

A new way of looking at picture books - -
We just started "looking" at Ms Blizzard's book, and it has already opened a whole new world for my children to discover. The format (full page color pictures accompanied by historical reference and discussion questions) is as enjoyable for the children as it is for adults. As a homeschool mother I appreciate the opportunity it provides to take a moment and wonder what the artist may have had in mind when they created their work. I also thank the author for the corresponding list of open ended discussion questions she provides. Take a moment to really look at a picture and let the child interpret it. You may be surprized at how they respond. I know I was. It has become especially popular with my 3 year old who considers the children her friends. We look at it daily and can't wait to add to our collection with another edition of the authors works. A wonderful introduction to art appreciation for all ages. Thank you Ms. Blizzard for a wonderful book! This series is sure to be a hit with all who appreciate art.

Everyone's Mandala Coloring Book Vol. 2 Review

This artist/author has made the beauty and mystery of the mandala available to a western audience. By taking the basic structure of the eastern mandala and infusing it with subtle imagery from other cultures, she creates a collection of images that are timeless and modern. Her native american inspired mandala's are among my personal favorites. I have used these images for my own entertainment, in therapeutic settings and as the starting points fiber art creations. It is interesting to see what one can learn about one's self by looking a completed mandala. As a fan of color books for adults, this is by far my favorite series in the field. Get some colored pencils, relax and see what happens.

Great Designs , High Price - D. Lloyd - Texas , USA
The designs in Everyone's Mandala Volume 2 are all excellent ! They are intricate enough to be interesting and simple enough to color one in a short ammount of time . The price is way too high for such a small collection in my opinion , but oddly enough I don't regret buying it .

Magical connection - S.S.S. - Phoenix, AZ
I love this coloring book. It is truly a classic. My favorite way to use it is to initiate communication with children or with teenagers that are otherwise reluctant to open up---coloring together, or using it as a "doodling page" while we talk about more concrete subjects at first. Before I know it, we're led to more significant communication.
Thanks to the author and creator for the gift of making this book available!

As a Buddhist, mandalas have a special power. I have enjoyed coloring these mandalas. But I think these mandala coloring books are of universal interest. My grand-daughters approach each mandala with energy and fascination. They are perforated, so each of the colored mandalas are completed and posted on the wall. I would recommend these mandala coloring books to everyone.

Check Out You Can Draw Star Wars for $11.66

You Can Draw Star Wars Review

Great material however, it is published with intention to attract young audience. The instruction is more for experienced artists as there is few steps on each drawing- missing the steps for detail and texture, which may make it difficult for beginner to produce "matching" appearance to the final picture in the book. This is the book I would recommend to experienced artist, never mind the "children book" look. Instruction inside is more for adult and advanced artist.

You Can Draw Star Wars Overview

From droids and wookies to Darth Vader, this step-by-step guide teaches budding artists everything they need to know to draw characters from the amazing world of Star Wars. I've used this with all my younger students - Ariella Vaccarino- creator of Voice Lessons To Go - Los Angeles
This is a great Disney Collection of classic Disney songs. It stops at Little Mermaid, so keep that in mind. But all the pieces are great Disney songs from past films. I've actually gone through a couple of them I have used them so much. Voice Lessons To Go's -Vocalize!- I always warm up with that first though!

Disney-Easy Piano - J. Witt - Indiana
I bought this for my 6 year old daughter who is in her second year of piano lessons. It is a book she will be able to use for many years to come. She can play some songs now and work up to the harder ones.

Baby Beluga Review

The almost two year old granddaughter started it, she heard Raffi songs at library storytime and couldn't stop talking about Baby Beluga. Then I couldn't get the song out of my head so I started singing it to the other 4 grandchildren who are 6 and under. We are all singing it and love the book. We can sing along and we adore the sweet illustrations, especially like the beluga whales with a fish tucked under their fins for night time!

Baby Beluga Overview

This fun-filled fourth album focuses gently on both the natural world and family love. Raffi's award-winning records and tapes have sold over 2 million copies.

John Thompson's Modern Course for the Piano: Second Grade - Book/CD Pack (John Thompson's Modern Course for the Piano Series) Review

I wouldn't use anything else. I went to the music store, looked through about 14 different kinds of beginner music teaching programs. Then I bought about 4 of them, and this was the clear winner by a mile. We're into the 3rd book and I'm very pleased. Teaches enough without being overwhelming. Songs are accessible to all ages, and my 8 year old is as engaged with the books as I am. We're both learning to play piano, and I suppose that's good enough for me! Oh - be sure and get the CDs if you are learning from scratch. Knowing how it's supposed to sound makes a big difference.

PS - Very occasionally I have to call my mom and ask her what the book means by something, as it assumes some more knowlege than I have. Having a person who knows how to play, that you can consult every once in a while, will make the process a breeze.

never too late to learn all the little things - jannaugle -
It is never to late to pick up these books we used as a child and study and learn ALL the things that keeps us from enjoying the piano.
I was too busy being a tom boy when I could have been studying and learning all the things that are on the "ground level".SO I never have learned to "enjoy" my piano.
Going back and reviewing the first grade book I had and then I was ready for the second grade.
At 63 I am getting more enjoyment from my piano. The "John Thompsom" series are recognized and promoted by most music teachers. The basics are tought so they can be learned. ( with just a little willingness from the student)

I, Juan de Pareja Review

I just dipped back into this wonderful book, which I first read when I was around 10 or 11 years old, and have re-read four or five times over the years. As a piece of literature, the writing is exquisite, evocative and intelligent while remaining accessible to younger readers. Historically, the author's careful research enabled her to build a beautiful tale that is imaginative while remaining faithful to the time period and to what little is known about Valazquez and Pareja. She also weaves in references which I didn't always catch the first time around but which made for rewarding re-reading, such as the side trip to Cremona, Italy to search out "a family of renowned makers of violins." Thematically, the book addresses such weighty topics as art, truth, slavery, longing, friendship with thoughtfulness and gentleness. And it all comes together in the voice of narrator Juan de Pareja, who along with the other main characters emerges so vividly from the pages as he recounts the story of his life.

This book also inspired me to learn more about Velazquez and his art, and while my appreciation of paintings remains sadly stunted, thanks to this read I have always sought out V.'s paintings when they are exhibited in museums, and when in Barcelona I made sure to feast my eyes upon Picasso's Las Meninas (which honor V.'s work of the same name). That, to me, is one of the greatest accomplishments of a work of historical fiction: enabling an otherwise ignorant reader like me to develop some understanding of a time and place and encouraging him/her to delve deeper.

I highly recommend this delightful read!

I, Juan de Pareja Feature

I, Juan de Pareja Overview

When the great Velázquez was painting his masterpieces at the Spanish court in the seventeenth century, his colors were expertly mixed and his canvases carefully prepared by his slave, Juan de Pareja. In a vibrant novel which depicts both the beauty and the cruelty of the time and place, Elizabeth Borton de Treviño tells the story of Juan, who was born a slave and died an accomplished and respected artist.
Upon the death of his indulgent mistress in Seville, Juan de Pareja was uprooted from the only home he had known and placed in the charge of a vicious gypsy muleteer to be sent north to his mistress’s nephew and heir, Diego Velázquez, who recognized at once the intelligence and gentle breeding which were to make Juan his indispensable assistant and companion—and his lifelong friend.
Through Juan’s eyes the reader sees Velázquez’s delightful family, his working habits and the character of the man, his relations with the shy yet devoted King Philip IV and with his fellow painters, Rubens and Murillo, the climate and customs of Spanish court life. When Velázquez discovers that he and Juan share a love for the art which is his very life, the painter proves his friendship in the most incredible fashion, for in those days it was forbidden by law for slaves to learn or practice the arts. Through the hardships of voyages to Italy, through the illnesses of Velázquez, Juan de Pareja loyally serves until the death of the painter in 1660.

I found the book to be a bit boring. I like to purchase historical books for my teens that will supplement their history lessons, in hopes to expand their joy of reading. I think this book will dampen it. I am looking for an alternative.

I absolutely LOVE this book! - Brown-Eyed Girl - Sacramento, CA
I was forced to read it for school when I was in junior high, and I am still so glad about that. The writing was so descriptive that after I finished it I felt as though I had just seen a movie of it.

This is one of the 3 best books I have ever read. Read this book.

Surprisingly Good, A Charming Story - brownie - ca
I, Juan de Pareja,is a historical fiction novel by Elizabeth Borten de Trevino. Juan's story is brilliantly told and wind's it's way from Juan growing up to Juan as an adult. Born into slavery(yes, that means the book does get pretty depressing sometimes) Juan has to find his way to his new Master's house, after his old Mistress dies of the plague. Along the way he is beat up by a gyspy, find friends with monks, and get's a jop as an assistent baker, and thats not even to the fourth chapter. The book describes most of Juan's life with his Master, who is a painter. Juan desperatly wants to paint, but alas, he can't, since he is a slave. Trevino does a great job making it a truly great book, although it does often get boring in places, which is why I only give it 4 out of 5 stars. But it does get a Grade: B+.

Check Out Crayon Rubbings (Chicken Socks) for $4.59

Crayon Rubbings (Chicken Socks) Review

On the one hand, I love the artwork. Like most Klutz books, it has the *coolest* artwork this side of Mo Willems. Great for coloring. And crayon rubbing, that's always a fave. Plus, the rubbing plates had a variety of patterns and they did work, I had no problem with that.

But... the plates have to be cut out of the book. This gives them a very sharp edge, and because they were hard to cut out it meant a grown-up had to do that task and the kid had to wait instead of being self-sufficient. For a small child, it may have been better if the plates came pre-removed to eliminate this. Also, the plates are clear, which means if you drop it you may have trouble finding it. Having them be opaque or slightly tinted would've been better.

The paper is very thin, which presumably helps with the rubbing. I had no problems with it, though. The crayons, on the other hand, were very soft. Great, vibrant colors - but so soft they left smudges on the fingers or on the bedspread if they landed there. Better to use your own crayons than the ones in the book, I think.

My nieces really loved it, they had a lot of fun with the book, so I'm adding a star to my review for that. I don't know if I'd buy it again - I was really annoyed with those crayons!

My go-to gift for the kindergarten set...boys and girls alike! - Magnum Fan - California
I purchased this book when our daughter was 4 (she is now 8) and she still loves to use it! We did not cut the stencils out of the book, so ours are still contained by the spiral (so no sharp edges or loose pieces to keep track of, as others have complained). Instead, I had her tear out the pictures and place them on top of the stencils to do the rubbings. This encourages her to hang them proudly around the house or to give them as "gifts" to friends, cousins, grandparents, etc. The crayons that were provided were quickly combined with a basket of other crayons, so I cannot speak to the quality of the included crayons. The provided pictures to color have long since been completed, so she uses plain paper to make her own designs. Great idea for a product and a thumbs up for us!

Disappointing - J. Martin -
I was disappointed by this book. It's a neat idea, but I don't like the fact that you're supposed to cut out the rubbing plates and tear out the coloring pages. Now I've got all these pieces to keep track of. I wish it had been more like the Chicken Socks Hand Art book where everything is self-contained.

My 4-year-old loves the glitter crayons but he got bored with the book after 2 pictures and went back to the Hand Art book. Get that one instead!

Real Cool - C. Cook - Central Virginia
I bought this book for my five-year-old niece. I, of course, perused the book before I wrapped it & couldn't fight the urge to try out the rubbings. It is so much fun! There are about 8(???) different embossed designs in the form of 4 plastic pages and a coloring book that follows. There is no way a child is going to find this boring. I gave it four stars because I was expecting better quality regarding the construction of this book, but I was still impressed by its craftiness.

The Last Holiday Concert Review

The last Holiday Concert

The title of the book I read was The Last Holiday Concert the author is Andrew Clements. This book takes place in a music room and at his school.

Evens, Hart, Evens

Evens, Hart, Evens have you heard that name before, well Hart Evens is the most popular kid in his grade, and in Harts music class he has done something he is going to regret. He also has been voted to be the new music teacher. So Hart is going to have to do a concert all by him self. But he has some friends on his side.

Liked or disliked

I liked this book because it surprised me every time I flipped the page. For example when Hart had one problem there went another problem. So Hart had to get everybody in shape and get started because he only had 2 ½ weeks left. I really liked the author words, hears some examples. Hart is kind of a bully but not much. He is very popular. He is in the 6th grade and a risk taker by flicking a rubber band at his teacher.

Rubber Band attack

Hart is in the 6th grade. He is very cool, he has lots of friends. He got to be music teacher because, he flung a rudder band at his teacher and the teacher got fed up with him and the class. So he quit and let them figure it out for them selfs. So the class voted hart teacher for now.

The boom

Do you want to hear more.... READ THE BOOK!

The Last Holiday Concert Feature

The Last Holiday Concert Overview

Winterhope.

It didn't sound like much, but it was a big idea. A very big idea.

It all started when Hart Evans zinged a rubber band that hit Mr. Meinert, the chorus director. Actually, it started before that, when Mr. Meinert learned he was out of a job because the town budget couldn't afford music and art teachers. Mr. Meinert got so mad at Hart that he told the sixth graders he'd had it -- they could produce the big holiday concert on their own. Or not. It was all up to them.

What happens when a teacher steps aside and lets the kids run the show? Not what Mr. Meinert would have predicted. And not what Hart Evans would have guessed, not at all.

Out of chaos, infighting, compromise, idealism, and finally, a fragile peace, the sixth grade choral concert was born. And they called it Winterhope.

But would it be the last holiday concert of them all?

Another great one! - Lydia Groen - New Hampshire USA
I'm an adult, but I still love Andrew Clements' engaging writing style and creative storytelling. One thing I appreciate about Clements' writing is that it's continually unpredictable - I was sure I knew which direction this particular story was going, but in the end, I was surprised! Without giving away the plotline, I thought the story was very realistic. Definitely read the author's note at the end, too!

Elaine, 8 yrs, Saint Louis, Missouri - -
This book was great. Hart Evens shot a ruber band smack on his chorus teacher. His teacher gets angry and decides to relax instead. So Hart Evens has to be the chorus director of the holiday concert. Hart's friends get mad at him because he can not fit everyone's ideas into the concert. They took a vote to decide what ideas to fit into the concert and what ideas to leave out. In the end, the children involved with the concert learned how to cooperate with each other.

The World's Greatest Elephant Review

My daughter first picked this book off the library book mobile. She loves animals, so we sat down to enjoy what we assumed was to be another "nice" simple animal story! Well! We got to the end of this most beautiful story and I was in tears!!!!!!!! My kids were only in preschool when we first found that book from the library book mobile and they LOVED it and stayed with it -- it's not as short or simple as other little animal stories.

Long story short -- we returned our library copy, and I found it on Amazon, ordered it for my kids, and have read it over and over and over. . . and have since given it to their friends as birthday presents, and everyone has loved it! I also found the adult version of this compelling true story of life, love, friendship, overcoming obstacles for myself and given it to the mom of one of the friends we gave this children's version to. . .

When my kids (girl/boy twins) were in preschool, I even brought it in to read to their class. The class and their teacher loved it and copied the title to order it for the class. (When the kids were real young like that, I skipped some of the details reading to the class, for time constraints. but now they are in kindergarten and I hope to be able to bring it into their kindergarten class and read the whole thing!)

Children's book: language and art - pamela - CA
After reading the adult version of the book "Modoc," which was fantastic, I ordered the children's version out of curiosity, as I do not have a child. However, my mother, 80, who can no longer read long books, greatly enjoyed the emotive aspects of the story.

As a retired education administrator whose job it was to order curriculum for our county-wide district, I have read hundreds of children's books. "The World's Greatest Elephant" is a children's book with a good vocabulary, and has a theme of overcoming difficulties in life. It is the type of story that could spawn meaningful discussions.

However, the artwork is very dreary (mostly muted reds and grays - probably a cost factor in production of the book). For instance, the picture of Modoc being rescued from the ocean simply shows an elephant in straps against a stark white background. There are never any blue skies. People's faces tend toward the "impressionistic" end of a continuum rather than a realistic, more photographic quality. Bram, shown atop Modoc's back in a circus picture, has the face of an old man and no neck. The artist's strong point was certainly not in drawing people.

It is unfortunate the Ralph Helfer couldn't have found a better artist, because the story, with good art and color, could easily have been rated a "5."

Was pleasantly surprised - Tess - in the mountains
I bought this book for my granddaughter after reading the adult version of MODOC (and loving it!). The story follows the main story leaving out many small details but one gets the impact of the boy and the elephant and the love, loyalty, and adventures. Beautiful watercolor illustrations!

A great picture book of a the World's greatest elephant - Becky L. Powell -
I was thrilled to find that the story of Modac has been written as a children's picture book. I read the book Modac to my fifth grade class and they sat enraptured. My small grandchildren listen just as intently to the picture book. When they are older, I'll read Modoc aloud to them too. There are many lessons woven in this story. The love between a boy and an elephant, courage, faith, perseverance, and keeping a promise. I promise you won't be disappointed when you choose this book.

Clifford At The Circus Review

I loved this book it was so cute how Emily and Clifford helped out at the circus because if they didnt the show wouldnt be able to continue. This book would be good for children 4-8. You could have a kid try to read this book to you when their just starting out, I started out on Clifford and Dr. Suess books when I was learning how to read. This book teaches children to help people out and not just do something for themselves. I wish I had a dog just like Clifford!! Cliffords always doing good things for other people even when he doesnt know them!

Not a huge fan - Amazon LVR - CA USA
My son likes Clifford. I try to. I find the stories a bit dated and reinforcing of stereotypes. This book is just ok.

Fun book - -
This book is a lot of fun. My son loves to hear about Clifford and Emily Elizabeth helping when the circus comes to town. As always Clifford saves the day. The pictures are bright and engaging and the book describes many different aspects of the circus. Just wait till you see what happens when Clifford eats all the cotton candy and then gets thirsty. I reccommend buying this book to find out.
