Great Price Klutz 6416 for $9.02

Invasion of the Bristlebots (Klutz) Review

It's definitely worth picking up for kids that are into science. It was quite easy to use and amusing to tinker with. It made my nephew curious about doing it himself -- just the goal I had in mind!

Invasion of the Bristlebots (Klutz) Overview

Invasion of the Bristlebots comes with two mini-robots — basically motorized toothbrush heads. These guys zoom around like caffeinated cockroaches, spinning, skittering, and bouncing off walls. Resistance is futile. The book bristles with ideas for robot games and activities. Race robots against each other. Use the included punch-out walls to construct a Bristlebot maze. Stage a robot sumo-wrestling match. You can even customize your Bots with the provided wire legs, feelers, and beady eyes. And just when you thought the robot invasion was under control, stick the tiny motors (technical name: Klutz Robotivators) on any lightweight contraptions of your own design to make pipe cleaner Bots, plastic fork Bots, paper clip Bots — basically, whatever-you’ve-got Bots. On YouTube, dedicated tinkerers show off motorized toothbrush heads that are pretty darned impressive. Researchers at Klutz Laboratories (the folks who brought you Battery Science and LEGO Crazy Action Contraptions) have sacrificed countless toothbrushes to develop high-performance Bristlebots with more zip, wilder action, and a control that lets you adjust a Bot’s behavior. It’s a brand-new Botastic world.

Fun while it lasted - J. Pies - USA
I bought these for my boys. They were very easy to put together and the boys had a blast playing with them. Then, suddenly one would no longer work. We tried changing the batteries with no luck. Now one boy has a working bristlebot and the other has a broken heart. As if things weren't bad enough, when I went online to try to find a solution to the dead bot, I found out that Klutz had stolen the idea from someone else.

Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin (Caldecott Honor Book) Review

The book is a great rhythmic read going through the primary instruments of the orchestra. In addition to teaching a child to identify the different instruments, the book teaches counting. Counting is taught for both cardinal numbers (1, 2, 3, ...) and musical groupings (solo, duo, trio, ...), though I'm not sure how much of the latter sticks. After the first few pages, my child starts to count the instruments on the different pages. Now and again, instead he'll point out the instruments on the different pages. Sometimes he'll even do both. It is a really enjoyable read even if you can do the whole book by heart. The images themselves are a bit whimsical and it is fun following the cat and dog advance through the pages, if you even notice them apart from the instruments.

As a side note, I think this book should be sold at all symphony halls across the country as it is the perfect environment for an easy sale.

Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin (Caldecott Honor Book) Overview

When this book begins, the trombone is playing all by itself. But soon a trumpet makes a duet, a french horn a trio, and so on until the entire orchestra is assembled on stage. Written in elegant and rhythmic verse and illustrated with playful and flowing artwork, this unique counting book is the perfect introduction to musical groups. Readers of all ages are sure to shout "Encore!" when they reach the final page of this joyous celebration of classical music.

Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin (Caldecott Honor Book) Specifications

"The STRINGS all soar, the REEDS implore, / The BRASSES roar with notes galore. / It's music that we all adore. / It's what we go to concerts for." In this exuberant tribute to classical music and the passionate, eccentric musicians who play it, author Lloyd Moss begins with the mournful moan and silken tone of one trombone. A trumpet sings and stings along, forming a duo, then a fine French horn joins in, "TWO, now THREE-O, what a TRIO!" The mellow cello ups it to a quartet, then ZIN! ZIN! ZIN! a violin soars high and moves in to make a quintet. The flute that "sends our soul a-shiver" makes a sextet, and "with steely keys that softly click," a sleek, black, woody clarinet slips the group into a septet. We move on! A chamber group of ten! And the orchestra is ready to begin. Moss should be congratulated for creating a playful, musical stream of rhyming couplets that seamlessly, slyly teaches the names of myriad musical groups. Marjorie Priceman, the whimsical, masterful illustrator of Elsa Okon Rael's When Zaydeh Danced on Eldridge Street and Jack Prelutsky's For Laughing Out Loud, won a Caldecott Honor Award for this swirling, twirling, colorful musical world worthy of thunderous applause and a standing ovation. The book is a great book but I was expecting the full sized version of it. The one I received was at least 50% smaller than the normal version.

Wonderful book to introduce instruments! - Holly Lewis - Medina, OH USA
I purchased this for my son when we visited the string section of the Cleveland Orchestra yesterday and we loved reading it once we got home and reliving the joy of the day! Gorgeous illustrations make music come alive visually for the reader and the text trips off the tongue easily. A good companion book to I Know a Shy Fellow Who Swallowed a Cello.

White Rabbit's Color Book (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition) Review

I brought this book home from the library for my daughter, who is almost 3, and we probably read it 7 times the first day it was at our house. (I immediately ordered our own copy)

This is a very lovely, simple story about a white rabbit who dips herself in tubs of paint. The rabbit is adorable and has a very innocent/inquisitive look about her. The tale includes a wonderful lesson on mixing paint colors. It is written simply so a preschooler can understand.

Simple, yet charming - bookjunkie -
White Rabbit's Color Book is a simple, yet charming presentation of the color wheel. A curious white rabbit finds three tubs of paint; red, yellow and blue. "Sunshine yellow, she thought. Lovely. A quick dip and . . . " the book continues. After yellow, orange, and red, my children were able to predict what was going to happen next. The end was a surprise to them, and they were eager to attempt making the color white rabbit found to be "just right."

Covers more than the basics. - Mary Lou Podlasiak - Caldwell, OH
I recommend it in my latest parenting book, "Kindergarten Simplified," for several reasons. It is an easy way to cover learning the primary colors (and more) prior to kindergarten screening, it introduces the concept of how we can manipulate our environment (scientific), and the story in general will encourage the joy of reading.

Great Book when learning about colors - Barbara Vinces - New York, NY

Doodle Journal: My Life in Scribbles (Klutz) Review

My daughters aged 10 and 11 each have this book. They draw in it for HOURS! I am ordering one for my 5 year old and a couple to keep on hand for gifts. More geared toward girls than boys, (note to publishers- do a "boys'" version!)

Doodle Journal: My Life in Scribbles (Klutz) Overview

A journal that’s beyond words. For beginning journal-keepers, especially tweens, it can be tough to put feelings into words. But putting feelings into doodles – that’s a whole different story. Introducing Doodle Journal, a book that makes self-expression as simple as letting your pen do its thing. This prompted journal is filled with cool, doodly artwork growing out of the corners and creeping up the edges of the pages like a wild vine of inspiration. But plenty of space on every spread is left invitingly clear, waiting for the journal-keeper’s touch. There are also tons of activities, including ""doodle-starters"" — faintly printed guidelines of cool shapes and patterns. Trace over them, adding your own embellishments, to make the designs your own. It’s the satisfaction of creation with no artistic skills required. Clever journal prompts and drawing ideas mean there is never a struggle thinking of what to doodle. And, of course, the one tool you need is included: a custom-designed gel pen, mounted in a convenient holder. It’s everything you need to do the doodles of your life.

The Legend Of The Indian Paintbrush (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition) (Paperstar Book) Review

Is it just me, or does de Paolo have one of the best artistic styles out there? Not only is he a master of art, but he is a grand story teller and is able to retell this story with a childlike wonder that, of course, brings out the necessary wisdom and meaning. I'm a fan of this gorgeous little flower, so an accompanying legend is always appreciated.

Here is the story of a young boy who is trying to find his place as a man. One night he has a dream where he is instructed to paint the sunset. What follows is a miraculous story that connects both to the native tribes and nature.

The Legend Of The Indian Paintbrush (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition) (Paperstar Book) Overview

FOR USE IN SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES ONLY. In a vivid retelling of an old folk legend, an Indian brave dreams of creating a painting that will capture the beauty of a sunset.

Love it! - David Mccurdy - SAFFORD, AZ, US
I loved this book as a child, and being of Blackfoot heritage this book was special to me! My son is in first grade and I bought this book hoping that he would love it too! He loved it! And has been interested in Native American culture since reading the book. It has opened up a whole new interest in his own heritage, and I am excited to share it with him. He could also relate to Little Gopher, the boy in the story who had unique gifts and talents to share with his people. Such a great children's book to share with all children!

Check Out The Body Rondo Book for $9.95

The Body Rondo Book Review

Developing coordination and understanding form are important musical concepts. The Body Rondo Book provides several body percussion pieces that help teacher's accomplish this with students. As an elementary school music teacher in New York City, I have taught some of these pieces to my students. Depending on the ages you teach, the pieces will range from moderately easy-to-learn to difficult. Each piece has a clear, concise, suggested teaching process at the bottom of the score.

I taught the first piece in the book to my elementary school students in one period. A few of them -- mainly the ones who practiced it at home -- almost mastered the entire thing with that one experience. Many of them required more work on it and were then able to master it with more work together. (These pieces are meant to be learned over several periods).

Some important observations: the students loved learning and performing the pieces, I noticed a high level of concentration as they tried to master each section and each difficult part, and, if students can "own" rhythm in their bodies -- as they learn to do in these pieces -- they can more authentically transfer that "ownership" to musical instruments. Also, the pieces just sound great and look great at a performance.

The Body Rondo Book Overview

Twelve easy to challenging body percussion (snaps, claps, stomps, thigh slaps) rondos to delight students and teachers. Even the easy pieces are musican and fun because of Jim's skillful rhythmic combinations. The multi-meter and syncopated pieces are a hoot; truly unique collection

Straight forward directions are included with great rondos. With the first rondo my classes have had hours of fun. This book will stay on my frequently used shelf as long as I'm teaching.

Challenging, but loads of fun! - M. Storti - Richmond, VA USA
I have only used this with my fifth grade students so far, but with great results! The author's notes are helpful in teaching the patterns, and the students love the body percussion exercises. We extend the lesson with small group improvisation. This is a great tool for teaching different meters and patterns, as well as rhythm and part-reading skills! The best part is, everyone has already brought their instrument!

Great tool for use in an Elementary Music Class - Donald G. Hicks - Hollywood, FL
I am an Elementary School Music Teacher, and use The Body Rondo Book with all of my classes. It is very useful in the general music classroom. The students always have a lot of fun with the pieces. They work very well as written. But, are also adaptable to using different drum rhythms from programs such as Garage Band as accompaniment.

Check Out Underground for $12.89

Underground Review

It doesn't take a lot of words to review the books of David Macaulay. Having loved these books for decades, I recently purchased Castle, Pyramid, and Underground for my grandson who even at 5+ years is wildly excited about building things. Although he won't be able to read these on his own for a year or two, his parents read to him daily and Castle has immediately captured him. In a year or two he'll be ready for Pyramid and Underground. Macaulay's line drawings are excellent and the text proves that he professionally knows what he's drawing. (He's been teaching at the Rhode Island School of Design for many decades.)

Underground Overview

David Macaulay takes us on a visual journey through a city's various support systems by exposing a typical section of the underground network and explaining how it works. We see a network of walls, columns, cables, pipes and tunnels required to satisfy the basic needs of a city's inhabitants.

Rather Disappointing - N. Ledgerwood - South Africa
Rather disappointed - expected something more child friendly - more like the how it works series - would've sent it back but the postage is more than the cost of the book. Information about the target range of customer would have been helpful as I was not able to review the book before purchase. I had simply purchased on the back of his other titles.

this the best book i have found to explain to eit's (engineering in training) just what civil engineering is all about.
it may be a childern's book, but it is the best on the subject of undeground utilities and transportation.
