Baby Danced the Polka (Ala Notable Children's Books. Younger Readers (Awards)) Review

I originally bought this book because of its title. My whole family is Polish, and I used to dance the polka with my grandmother every Saturday night. Because of that tradition and those memories, I thought this book would be perfect for my daughter since the baby danced the polka. I certainly didn't expect it to be as good as it is! It really exceeded my expectations!

The focus of the book is a baby who won't take his nap. It's nap time on the farm, and all of the animals are sleeping. Mama and Papa put their baby in his crib and try to get their chores done "But instead..." the baby dances with his stuffed animals. Each time he gets up, he dances with a different animal, and each time the parents put him back in the crib. He dances the polka with the polka-dotted pig. He boogie-woogies with the frisky little goat. He dances the cha-cha with the chocolate colored cow. He shooby-doobies with the shaggy little sheep. Eventually the parents agree, "This baby's just not sleepy. He will never stay in bed." They decide to join the baby and "have the best ol' Polka-fest in all of Arkansas." The book ends with the baby, alseep in his crib, dreaming of polka parties and dancing with his stuffed animals!

There are flaps to open up for each animal. "Baby danced the polka with the polka-dotted..." (lift the flap to the right side) "PIG!". My daughter enjoys lifting the flaps, and she'll say the names of the animals as she does it. She also enjoys the rhyme and rhythm of the story -- it's as if I'm singing it to her. Perfect for a book about a baby who has dancing feet!

The chores the parents do are things we don't see often today (fetch water, starch long johns, wash a wig, haul water, etc.), but that makes no difference. The story is still a great one!

This book actually had to be hidden because my daughter demanded we read it to her so much. I believe all young children would enjoy this silly story about a dancing baby who doesn't want to sleep!

My 2 year old is obsessed - J. Weitzel - Buffalo, NY
I bought this for my 2-year-old daughter and newborn. The 2-year-old has asked us to read it to her about 100 times since we received it the other day. She has already memorized large parts of the text, because the rhythm, rhyme, and repetition of certain phrases flow so well. I recommend this book for any young children. They will likely love the rhythm of it, as well as the inclusion of a baby and his stuffed animals throughout.

We Love this Book - Dina -

Great little book - lil momma of two - Little Rock, AR
This is a great little book. Fun to read and both children seemed to enjoy it. We live in Arkansas so my 4 year old thought that was neat that they mentioned where she lived. My one year old liked the flaps to open. I would say good for ages 1 through 4.
